PUPILS from Inverkeithing High School have gotten their hands dirty at a litter pick at St Margaret's Marsh.

The beach clean up was completed in conjunction with the Plastic Free Dalgety Bay Group on Saturday (May 13) and saw an impressive 103kg of litter collected.

Not included in the in the final total were numerous large items that were too heavy to be weighed.

Sharing the data of the collection on their Facebook page, Plastic Free Dalgety Bay wrote: "We collected a total of 103kg of litter plus numerous very large items that were too heavy to weigh. We also recorded numbers of some of the most common items we found and the brands of bottles and snack wrappers for the Surfers Against Sewage brand audit."

Surveying their litter pick, they recorded two full dog poo bags, 18 lighters, 53 tampon applicators, 66 plastic bottles, 87 snack packets or wrappers, 201 bottle lids, 247 medium sized unidentified plastic pieces, 718 small pieces of unidentified plastic, 978 cotton buds and too many nurdles (small plastic pellets) to count!

Also found on the day was a plastic snake, floss sticks, plastic straws, silicon tubs, rope, tennis ball, a toilet seat, shoes, a ketchup sachet, a carriage, cartridge cases, a teabag, a small light bulb, a glue stick and vapes.

Brands that they found and recorded for the Surfers Against Sewage audit were Irn Bru, Coca-Cola, Lucozade, Fruit Shoot, Pepsi Müller Frijj, Powerade, Tim Horton’s, Fanta, 7 Up, Monster, Snickers, Barr, Cadbury’s, Snickers, M&Ms, Minstrels, Galaxy, Mars, Walker’s, McCoy’s, Bounty, Hubba Bubba, McDonald’s, Crunchy, Ribena and Tesco.

They continued: "Have to say I was really impressed by the attitude and engagement of the young people who gave up their Saturday afternoon to do this – massive thanks to everyone who took part and well done all of you, you were amazing.

"We will definitely be organising more clean-ups and other actions with the school soon."
