A DALGETY BAY hub which promotes mental wellbeing through arts and crafts as well as socialisation is celebrating 14 months in the community.

That Place in the Bay opened in 2022, after a charity was created at the end of 2021 through private funds, and has since become a home for groups and businesses.

Completely run by volunteers, the hub offers items for children and adults to paint and take home – with prices ranging from 50p to £12 – for families to enjoy.

The latest development has been the opening of a pottery studio at the centre with an international tutor who escaped war in Ukraine and moved to Dalgety Bay.

The studio was recently visited by "pottery royalty" Caitlin Foulds, a contestant in The Great Pottery Throwdown, who hosted a class for pottery students.

That Place in the Bay has worked with local primary and secondary schools and is a base for Dalgety Bay's Andy's Man Club.

Efforts involving local schools have included gifts of "hundreds" of dictionaries and thesauruses, while the hub also frequently gives away books to members of the community.

It has joined forces with Fife Council to provide Cafe Inc during holidays and offered free hot soup and rolls over the winter period to those in need, with help from Ingenico and KDM.

On top of that, the team secured a grant from Asda to help with the cost of fresh fruit to offer customers.

Volunteers also opened the doors to serve free mince pies and coffee on Christmas day.

The group commented: "We know that many face social isolation on that day and it was an amazing atmosphere, two of our local councillors came along too, we had a full house.

"Genuinely heart-warming to have people share some precious time to counter social isolation on one of the most wonderful days of the year.

"Hillfield Swifts and Asda generously donated the mince pies – it’s touching to get such generosity and we hope they will forgive us for highlighting their support.

"We’ve been a film set, we’ve had Stone Soup Storytelling Ceilidh, we had very busy and successful markets too, with more coming this summer.

"Our Sunday car boot sales have also made a comeback.

"Our lovely friends at K107fm and Kingdom FM have been amazing support as well as our many overseas supporters in Canada, Australia, Costa Rica and many European countries.

"Recent visits by some of our MSP’s have helped also, Claire Baker MSP gave a fantastic contribution at parliament on related issues."

That Place in the Bay is open daily and has plenty of parking and ground floor access.
