A DUNFERMLINE volunteer who works with Pittencrieff Park's beloved peafowl has been awarded for her efforts.

Carlyn Cane, one of the senior members of the aviary team, was named Volunteer of the Year at the recent Fife Voluntary Action awards.

Carlyn, who is student nurse, dedicates much of her time to the birds and, alongside lead warden Suzi Ross, helped to nurse Louis, the peacock severely injured in an attack on the sanctuary, back to health last year.

The mum also cares for peahen Charley, who lives with her in her house due to a birth defect.

Little Charley was born with deformities in her legs and needs round-the-clock care.

She can't live with the other birds but can often be found in the visitors area of the aviary to welcome the public.

She has also been known to tour Dunfermline in a pram with Carlyn, and even attended celebrations when King Charles visited the city last year.

After winning the award, Carlyn thanked supporters for their "kind words".

She added: "Again a massive thank you to the community, the boss (Suzi Ross), Elizabeth and Norman, all our amazing seniors and the brilliant volunteers I have the pleasure and privilege to work with."

Hundreds of nominations were received by Fife Voluntary Action from across the Kingdom.

Entries were then whittled down to a shortlist of three in each category by an independent panel of judges.

The awards were presented by Provost of Fife Jim Leishman.
