ONE of the summer's sporting highlights began today and West Fife kids warmed up for SW19 by serving up their tennis skills.

With Wimbledon around the corner – the prestigious competition at the All England Lawn Tennis Club is now underway – pupils in P3 and P4 stepped onto the courts at Dunfermline Tennis Club recently for two 'Mini Wimbledon' festivals.

Organised by the Bothwell Street club alongside Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council, with support from Active Schools Fife, 25 teams, featuring 100 youngsters, took part across both days.

With the sun shining, it was St Serf's / Holy Name who claimed game, set and match in the P3 competition, with St Margaret's finishing runners-up, as Carnegie and Cairneyhill also took part.

In the P4 event, Cairneyhill were the winners, followed by Dalgety Bay 'A', Dalgety Bay 'B' and Duloch 'B', and Dunfermline Tennis Club head coach, Alan Russell, was thrilled with how well both festivals went.

"It was fantastic, really good," he said.

"It was the first we'd held since 2019. It was always one of the highlights of the year, so it was great to have it back. The feedback on the day was brilliant. We had 25 teams, and 100 kids, over the two days.

"We've been doing a schools roadshow, and have visited 18 primary schools and for high schools, and the feedback has been wonderful. There has been great enthusiasm."

Alan expressed his thanks to Active Schools for their support in providing young leaders to umpire the events, and to the sports council, which organises a series of festivals across a variety of sports for primary schools throughout the year.

Points are awarded and go towards a final total that determines the winners of the 'Sports School of the Year' accolade at their annual awards ceremony.
