A DUNFERMLINE mum is hoping to inspire children to learn her native Hungarian with a new 'language kit'.

Ildiko Wardlaw, 35, hopes to help other parents engage their kids after she struggled to find ways to keep up with teaching her own.

The subscription box, named KukucsBox, will include books and activities in Hungarian to immerse youngsters in the language within the comfort of their own homes.

Ildiko has also launched a playgroup in Dunfermline for toddlers where they can speak Hungrarian freely with each other and their parents.

She said: "I moved to the UK in 2010 and my husband is Scottish.

"The idea for the box came from my struggles to raise bilingual children as during COVID I struggled to keep up with the Hungarian.

"I have ordered Hungarian books and created activities based on the books.

"It is ready to use, with learning materials, as a busy parent you don't have the time to research.

"My son loves it and he was able to learn the words included within a week, we kept practicing.

"You need to be consistent."

Ildiko previously worked at an interior design business in Edinburgh but after moving to Dunfermline just over a year ago she decided not to return in order to spend more time with her six-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter.

"I was looking for work but nothing suited out family life," she explained.

"I came to the realisation I needed to do something.

"There is quite a big Hungrarian community all over Britain and in Fife.

"There was a Hungarian playgroup in Edinburgh but it was only once a month and it wasn't consistent, it needs to be every week to create an environment to help kids.

"Even my son, he mostly speaks English but he was happy to go."

Each KukucsBox includes an illustrated book in Hungarian as well as flashcards and a vocabulary poster related to the book.

There is also a list of songs that link to the book and exploration tools to wipe clean activity sheets.

The subscription launched on Wednesday and you can find out more here

Anyone interested in taking part in Ildiko's playgroup can get in touch via the Kukucs jàtszócsoport Facebook page.
