Over 120 kilos of rubbish was collected during a beach clean up in Dalgety Bay on Sunday.

A total of 15 bin bags were filled by 20 volunteers who turned up at the event on the beach by the Pumping station.

Kim Blasco, from the Dalgety Bay Plastic-Free group, said participants were shocked at the huge number of wet wipes and nurdles which they came across.

"The shore by the pumping station is absolutely covered in sewage-related debris, following a recent discharge, and our bags were mainly full of wet wipes, period plastic, cotton buds and other single-use items that get flushed down the loo," he said. "We barely got halfway along the worst bit, there was so much to pick up!

"As well as trying to raise awareness about the importance of avoiding single-use plastics where possible and disposing of them properly, Plastic-Free Dalgety Bay works to try and prevent such single-use items from being produced in the first place and to promote viable alternatives."
