Construction work on a memorial in a Dunfermline park is due to be completed by end of November.

It was agreed back in February of this year, that the Fife Babies Memorial Garden would be located in the southern part of Public Park. This came after the ‘baby ashes scandal’ was uncovered in 2012 when it was discovered that baby ashes were not routinely returned to their families.

The bereaved parents had wrongly been told that no ashes from their children existed. Fife Council apologised to the affected families and the Fife Baby Memorial Working Group was set up to help create a suitable memorial for the babies whose ashes were not returned to their loved ones.

The memorial garden will have native plants as well as a quiet contemplation space with seating.

Alan Paul, head of property services, said: “The construction of the memorial is going well and is on schedule for completion at the end of November.

“Paths have been laid, bulbs planted, and the memorial tree has been installed. A bespoke sculpture is almost ready and we’re working with parents on some of the finer details of the memorial ahead of it being ready to open.”

As the memorial garden is at the southern part of the park, it is close to Dunfermline City railway station and is south of the children’s playpark.
