A Dunfermline man failed to get treatment for his pup after accidentally standing on it and breaking its leg.

As a result, 32-year-old Stuart Connolly, of Headwell Avenue, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on February 21 last year, being the person responsible for a dog, he failed to seek immediate medical help for the animal and left it with an untreated broken leg.

He was also in possession of diamorphine in his home.

Depute fiscal Laura McManus said the matter came to light after police executed a search warrant at Connolly’s home.

“The place was in a state of disarray and there was a small puppy, a Staffordshire terrier type,” she added.

Officers observed the pup was walking in an irregular manner and Connolly said he had stood on its leg accidentally five days earlier.

The police also found heroin valued at £550 in the house.

The dog was seen by a vet and an X-ray showed it had sustained a broken leg.

Defence solicitor Alan Davie said the dog had since been removed by the Scottish SPCA.

He went on: “He stepped on the dog and he had seen it was limping. Instead of addressing the issue immediately he waited, which is a matter of regret to him.”

He said that his client is a heroin addict and was taking large amounts of the drug at the time.

Connolly has had another dog for the past eight months, he added.

Sheriff Francis Gill imposed a 145-day restriction of liberty order.

The Crown had sought a disqualification order banning Connolly from keeping dogs but this was rejected by the sheriff.
