OUTLANDER is "magnificent" but the popularity of the hit TV series is contributing to parking problems in Culross.

That's the view of Councillor Sam Steele who loves the show but isn't so keen on the traffic congestion caused by fans flocking to see the locations in the village where it was filmed.

And she's backed a proposed Fife Council measure for a 'seasonal urban clearway' to tackle parking issues on Sandhaven.

At the South and West Fife area committee, Cllr Steele said: "Myself and Cllr (Graeme) Downie have had many complaints about this and I think this will definitely go a long way to address those concerns.

"Whilst Outlander is magnificent we know it brings much more traffic to beautiful Culross which does cause a lot of issues."

Others in the village are willing to put up with the disruption - "bus loads" descend on Culross in the summer - and welcomed the announcement that Outlander will return for an eighth and final season.

Lesley Craig, from the council's traffic management service, said Culross Community Council have "a lot of concerns about parking on Sandhaven".

She explained: "The urban clearway would be seasonal. It would start on March 1 each year and finish on October 31.

"It prohibits parking on Sandhaven between 9am and 6pm every day.

"It would only be done by signage, the reason for the clearway is you don't have to put double yellow lines down but that's the effect of the order."

Ms Craig added: "Obviously Culross is auch a popular tourist destination that there's a lot of vehicles parking on Sandhaven.

"That parking causes a lot of congestion and there's a lot of damage to the cobbles and footpaths there too."

The committee agreed to the promotion of a traffic regulation order and a period of consultation will get underway.

Cllr Downie said: "It's a lovely wee village to visit and attracts a great number of tourists which brings huge economic benefits to the area.

"I think this measure will try and rebalance that a little bit and address some of the concerns of the local residents.

"We do see cars parking on that narrow bit of road and it can really cause a lot of disruption, especially during the busy summer months."
