The daughter of a man who lost everything in a major house fire in Dunfermline yesterday (Saturday, December 30) has thanked people who have rallied round and offered "overwhelming" support.

Andrew Hagart's home in St Andrews Street was badly damaged by a blaze yesterday afternoon, and he was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters also rescued their pet dog Dexter, who had been trapped in the property.

Katie Hagart has since set up a GoFundMe page to support her dad, who thankfully is now out of hospital, but is having to stay in a B&B in Dysart due to the extensive damage to his home.

Katie wrote: "My dad's house has been completely destroyed by a fire, he has lost everything after living there for 17 years. He only had the clothes on his back and his slippers.

"I'm looking to raise money to be able to buy him clothes and the basics to do him as the house will not be liveable for a very long time."

Since the fire, Katie has been inundated with offers of help, with many people donating clothing and household items for her dad. She has been moved to tears by the kindness shown by so many.

"I'm so overwhelmed by the response," she said. "I never in a million years thought anyone would want to help but I've done nothing but cry all day at how generous and caring people have been, and I've still got more things for dad to pick up tomorrow."

She is also hugely grateful to the the emergency services and others involved in rescuing her dad and caring for him.

Katie said: "Thank you to everyone who helped get my dad out safely. The firefighters were actually amazing, even saving Dexter with a little oxygen mask."

At the height of the blaze, four fire appliances and crews were on the scene. The street around the fire was cordoned off and bus services had to be diverted away from the area.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received a call alerting them to the fire at 2.48pm.

Two appliances and a height appliance were initially despatched to the scene, but another two appliances and crews were sent to join them.

Firefighters used 'Smokey Paws' (oxygen for animals) for Dexter at the scene.

Andrew was reunited with Dexter after being discharged from hospital. However, Dexter can't stay with Andrew in the B&B, so he's staying with Katie for the time being.

Anyone who wishes to donate to support Andrew, can do so at Katie's GoFundMe page.
