NEW research has supported a call for a direct bus service between Dunfermline and Stirling.

Data from the University of Stirling has found that around 400 students from the city could benefit from the introduction of a service.

The research has been welcomed by local MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville who has previously called for a route.

She has been building support for a City Service alongside her MSP counterpart in Stirling, Evelyn Tweed.

The pair met with Transport Minister Fiona Hyslop in November, who provided invaluable advice and support on developing the project.

"Since I became MSP for Dunfermline in 2016, it has puzzled me why we have no direct public transport links with Stirling," said Ms Somerville.

"It only takes 40 minutes in the car, but attempting the same journey by bus or train would take you closer to an hour and a half.

"If we want people to help the environment and use their car less often, it is imperative that reliable public transport alternatives are available.

"I am confident that this service would be well used by students, both living in Dunfermline and across other West Fife communities.

"It would also provide convenient access to retail, heritage sites, and cultural attractions, fostering economic growth and promoting tourism in both cities.

"By ensuring travel between our cities is more straightforward, we can unlock new opportunities for businesses and residents alike."

Ms Somerville also met with Stagecoach representatives last month and said they were "not against" exploring the idea further.

"I would urge them to strongly consider this proposal and I would be delighted to help in any way I can, in order to make this a reality," she added.
