A DUNFERMLINE primary school has been praised for its use of Quality Improvement (QI) tools.

Duloch Primary School was visited by NHS East London and The Scottish Government Children and Young People's Improvement Collaborative earlier this month to see how staff were implementing the teaching and learning methods.

Depute Headteacher, Lynn McCreadie, who has been leading the work at Duloch, shared the breadth of improvement work across classes and the efforts to get it right for individual learners.

She said: "We were delighted to welcome visitors to share our improvement successes.

"As part of our school improvement plan, we have been strengthening teachers' knowledge, skills and confidence in using the Quality Improvement Journey. This is a systematic method which supports improvement work across the school.

"We use data to help us focus on the root causes of problems, not merely the symptoms.

"By testing and measuring change we are learning what works and what doesn’t. Where changes aren’t working, we are quickly able to tweak and adapt."

Quality Improvement Methodology is empowering leadership at all levels: it encourages staff to lead improvement work within their classrooms and to transform their practice based on their data and learning.

Visitors spent some time visiting classes and speaking with teachers and pupils about the improvement work.

They were keen to see how Quality Improvement is being used within Education and if these tools could be used in the same way in the healthcare sector.

She continued: "Fundamental to Duloch’s success has been staff coaching and supporting one another through the improvement journey. Involving pupils is also key to the success of the improvement work.

"Pupil involvement in target setting, measuring success and setting next steps has been key a pivotal part of the journey."
