A new book box has been installed in Dunfermline’s Pittencrieff Park.

Located on the wall next to the Italian Garden, just below the peacock café, the book box holds about 30 books.

These have been kindly donated by the Carnegie Library and also by members of the Friends of Pittencrieff Park and Dunfermline Men’s Shed. Many are for children.

The idea originated with a trustee of the Friends named Gail, and was supported by Harry Dunn, the chair og the group. They talked over specifications with members of Dunfermline Men’s Shed at the Steading in the Glen.

Materials were estimated at £120 to £150, and Fife Communities Climate Network gave a grant to cover the costs.

It was painted in pillar box red by Louis Douglas, another member of Dunfermline Men’s Shed, who is a retired painter and decorator.

The cabinet has glass panelled double doors and was assembled by Richard Lawrence and Finlay Prattis.

Richard said: “Unfortunately, the weather was so poor in February and there’s no heating overnight in our workshop, so the gloss paint wouldn’t dry. Louis took it home and stood it in their conservatory to dry.

“Apparently, his wife wasn’t best pleased with the reek through the house!”

The box was installed last week in a spot recommended by the head gardener, Mike Wallace. It’s now open for use and anyone can simply take a book from the box and swap it for one of their own.

“We are very keen that a section of the Book Box should be used on a regular basis by the children that visit the Glen,” added Harry Dunn.
