DUNFERMLINE businessmen and women are concerned about soaring energy costs, the difficulties of attracting and keeping staff and their rates bills.

Local councillor Naz Anis-Miah had invited shop owners, sole traders and entrepreneurs to outline the challenges they face at a surgery last week.

As the SNP candidate for the Dunfermline and Dollar seat in the forthcoming General Election, he's hoping to get the chance to do something about those issues.

He said: "I'm really grateful that those who came along provided such valuable insight about the biggest issues facing businesses in our city.

"We were able to have a really productive conversation about utility bills, recruitment and customer habits and I feel this sharing of knowledge can prove to be very useful.

"Our local businesses are the lifeblood of our community and it's imperative that we work together to address their needs and do what we can to help them thrive, not just survive.

"Events like these are invaluable, helping us all to communicate effectively, identify potential solutions and find a path forward, together."

The meeting with the business community was advertised as taking place in the City Chambers but it was switched to the Antioch restaurant around the corner.

The Dunfermline South councillor had asked those in attendance to share their perspectives on the various issues and obstacles they have experienced while operating in Scotland's newest city.

He said that top of the list was the huge rise in energy costs - up to five times higher than two years ago - followed by staff recruitment and retention, rates reassessment and the challenges of funding growth for small businesses, such as vehicle leasing.

Cllr Anis-Miah concluded: "It is now hoped that further events will be organised, with further members of the local business community invited along to add to the ongoing conversation."
