The peacocks in Pittencrieff Park are celebrating having a successful Easter weekend in the park.

As previously reported in the Press, the volunteers were celebrating the holiday and raising funds for the beloved birds.

Carlyn Cane, one of the volunteers and a member of the senior lead team, said: “We had a great Easter weekend at the Peacock Sanctuary. We had lots on for the kids including colouring in, rock painting and making bonnets, and we had our egg and spoon races and plenty of chocolate eggs.

“Our Easter bonnet winners, judged by our chairman Bob Cane, were Annabelle Galloway (5) in first place, second place went to Mack Brown and third place to Millie Ivison. Our runners up were Aria Hunter (6), Ruby Quinn and Hope Ramsay (6) and they all received Easter eggs as a treat.

“We were very grateful to Roni Springthorpe, Community Champion for Tesco Fire Station, for the donation of lots of tea, sugar and coffee, to the customers for donating the Easter eggs, and to Jimmy Mason, who came along and took some fantastic photos of the kids and the birds.

“Our afternoon tea was lovely, and the spread was amazing, including sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes and biscuits made by our volunteers, and all funds received go towards the upkeep of the peafowl and towards our new project of adding a nursery enclosure.”

This new nursery enclosure will make a big difference to the mums and new babies.

Carlyn added: “Currently, mums and new babies or unwell birds are kept in the nursery where we have heat for them, but there is no access to the outside. We have over 23,000 followers on our Facebook page and if every follower could donate just £1 each, we could install an outside area of them to enjoy the fresh air separate to the others.

“We are in talks with the council regarding the planning of this, however we are looking for someone to help us design and build the metal exterior cage. Our '30 Fundraiser' currently ends in 12 days and payments can be made through PayPal or into the bank account with all details on our page.”
