Inverkeithing High School’s senior football team won the Fife Cup for the second year in a row, with a comfortable 4-1 win over Waid Academy.
Seeing off competition from Queen Anne and Levenmouth earned Divit a place in the final at Bayview, and the youngsters rose to the occasion perfectly on Friday, March 20.
It was midway into the first half when Howie Brogan opened the scoring, converting a terrific strike into the top corner from outside the penalty box.
Harrison Lochen doubled the lead just ten minutes later when he put away a close-range effort after a quick counter-attack.
The Anstruther side came out swinging in the second period, winning a penalty that could have brought them right back into the match. But keeper Callum Wilson produced a great save down low to his right, preserving the two-goal lead.
Lochen scored his second of the evening shortly after to put Inverkeithing three in front. Waid pulled one back with a good strike from the edge of the box before Fergus Hughes put the game to bed by grabbing a fourth conversion a few minutes before the final whistle.
Coach and PE teacher Stewart Luke said: “The group have been a real pleasure to work with this year, and as well as being a talented group of footballers, they have also shown a real commitment and dedication to their school football and have worked very hard throughout the season.”
The victory on Friday March 20 was made all the more special given that it’s the school’s last academic year before children move over to the new Caledonia High School in Rosyth.
It’s only the third time in five decades that the cup has been won by Inverkeithing. Players from S4, S5, and S6 competed in the fixture, with many of the older boys following on from last year’s penalty shoot-out triumph over local rivals St Columba's.
Mr Luke continued: “I have coached most of the S6 pupils since they were in S1 and believe a few of them will go on to have promising football careers. As a reward for their efforts, the team were treated to an evening at the local bowling alley and had some food together, which was a really nice way to end their time together and celebrate their cup success.”
