A Dalgety Bay man who tips the scales at 37 stones has found a new lease of life by participating in a ITV show.

For many like Steven McKell, 23, just leaving the house can be terrifying for fear of 'fat shaming'.

So, when the opportunity came to partake in The 18-30 Stone Holiday, taking Steven on an exclusive plus-size holiday to conquer his fears, he couldn't say no.

The call centre worker told the Press: "It was absolutely amazing. I always wanted to do something like that, but it was nerve wrecking.

"I mean I hadn't even set foot on a plane before. There was no judgement and I had a lot of fun in paradise with an amazing group of people who inspired me to be myself.

"I don't want to glorify being plus-sized but a lot of the time you don't have the confidence to go out and do things.

"You could be on holiday at a restaurant or in bed and automatically in the back of your head you're thinking, will this be sturdy enough to hold me?

"It definitely makes you anxious."

Steven and seven other obese Brits were whisked away to a hidden island called Eleuthera, in the Caribbean, to 'The Resort'.

The idyllic getaway is the only place in the world built for people over 30 stones, where rooms have been altered to suit the fuller figure.

Chairs are almost a metre wide, bed frames have been reinforced and guests can help themselves to a buffet open three times a day.

A specially designed programme of activities forces guests to re-evaluate their bodies and overcome their fears, in a radical new approach that could transform their lives.

Tv producers were so impressed with Steven's larger than life personality that they signed him up for the show within 24 hours of him applying, but he still had to face the demons in his head.

Steven added: "This place is not a weight loss resort, but we were encouraged to speak about our issues.

"They showed everybody that we can be plus sized and still go out, but I definitely had a lot of revelations about my weight too.

"Even on the plane I was out of my comfort zone, but I now have a new lease of life and know that I can do things."

Steven now hopes that he can work in social media using his influence to inspire others.

The 18 – 30 Stone Holiday is on ITV tonight at 9pm.
