With strike action taking place across Scotland and the rest of the UK, many are wondering when these strikes are happening and what kind of disruption to expect.

This comes amid the spiralling cost of living crisis brought on in part by high inflation which has surpassed 10%.

Unions across several sectors are taking part in industrial action including teachers, railway staff, and postal workers.

All the strikes taking place in Scotland in December and when to expect them 

Here are all the strikes taking place in Scotland and when they are set to happen:

Teachers

While strike action across Scotland took place on December 7 and 8, the country's largest teaching union, EIS, warned that if the Scottish Government doesn't offer an improvement on its 5% offer, more strikes could take place.

When could strikes take place: January 10 and 11 for primary schools and from January 16 and February 6 for secondary schools.

Royal Mail workers

Royal Mail staff are in a long-running dispute with the company's CEO, Simon Thompson over plans to overhaul the company through redundancies and changes to contracts.

When: Strikes are taking place today (Friday, December 9) and will also take place on December 11, 14, 15, 23, and 24.

Network Rail workers

Members of RMT and the TSSA are on strike over, pay, working conditions, and job security amid a long-running dispute with rail bosses.

While ScotRail staff accepted a pay rise of 7.5% for conductors and ticket examiners as well as an 8.5% rise for lower-paid employees, Network Rail staff across the UK are still on strike.

When: There will be a significantly reduced rail service between December 13 and January 8, with strike action officially taking place on December 13, 14, 16, and 17.

Border Force

Border Force staff announced strike action last month and will walk out in several airports across the UK, including Glasgow.

When: The strikes will take place for 8 days between December 23 and New Year's Eve.

Driving examiners

Strike action will see a number of driving centres close and driving tests cancelled for learners.

These strikes form part of national industrial action by the PCS union over pay, pensions, jobs, and redundancy terms.

When: Driving examiners in Scotland and the North East of England will go on strike from December 13 to 18.

Highway workers

Highway workers who are members of the PCS union are also striking as part of a national dispute over pay, working conditions, and redundancy terms.

When: 12 days of industrial action have been announced with a series of staggering strikes taking place between December 16 and January 7.

All workplaces across the UK will be affected on January 3 and 4.

Civil Servants 

Civil Servants are also going on strike across the UK, affecting services in Scotland.

When: Scottish and Northern Irish civil servants will strike on December 13 to 18 with new strike dates occurring on a rolling basis.
