NOMINATIONS to decide who will make the shortlist for West Fife’s sports ‘Oscars’ will close on Monday.

The Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council awards 2014 will be held next month and there are five days left to cast your vote and decide who will have a chance of winning one of the 10 prestigious prizes on offer.

The awards celebrate the very best of talented sportsmen and women in West Fife with the top accolade the West Fife sports personality of the year, given to the outstanding sports person in Dunfermline and West Fife over the past 12 months.

Pitreavie AAC hurdler Eilidh Child won the award for an unprecedented six consecutive years since 2007 but last year the top prize was won by Carnegie Swimming Club’s Mark Szaranek (pictured), who became British youth champion in the 100m butterfly and picked up numerous national titles in 2013. In addition, a further nine prizes will be handed out, including the The Asda St Leonard’s trophy, which is for the young sports personality of the year for those aged 16 and under.

Team sports are recognised with two awards, the Rotary Club of Dunfermline junior team of the year award for under-16s and the Benny Hutton team award for an over-16 team, while the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust centenary masters award recognises the outstanding male or female athlete aged 35 or over.

The East Kilbride Sports Council award is for the individual athlete with a disability who has achieved significant progress in their sport during the year, and the Active Fife coach of the year and youth coach of the year – which is presented to an under-20 – are also up for grabs.

The services to sport award recognises individual volunteers who have given exceptional service to their sport and by so doing, helped to foster and develop sport locally. Nomination forms are available from Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council at Music Institute, East Port, by calling 03451 555 555 (ext 49 33 44), or by emailing sports.councilwest@fifeleisure.org.uk.
