DUNFERMLINE full-back Ryan Williamson has been named in the Scotland under-21 squad for an upcoming European Championship double-header.

The 21-year-old has been rewarded for a fine start to the season with a call-up by Scot Gemmill for next month's qualifiers against England and Latvia.

Williamson has previously been selected for training camps at under-17 and under-19 level, and was called up to the 19s squad in 2014.

He didn't win a cap but will now have the chance to feature in the dark blue with the under-21s.

Pars boss Allan Johnston pressed the case for Williamson's inclusion after Saturday's win at Brechin City, commenting: "We must have some players in Scotland for him not to be in the under-21 squad. He isn't even round about it. It is not as if it is a one of, he has been doing it week in week out this season. He has been outstanding and I don`t think there is a better right back in the league.

"He is doing fantastic and he just has to keep that momentum going and hopefully that will catch the eye of the people at Scotland who obviously make the decisions."

The Scotland under-21s play England at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium on Friday October 6 before facing Latvia in Liepaja on October 10.
