PITREAVIE track star Eilidh Doyle won her first-ever individual global medal by claiming bronze at the IAAF World Indoor Championships on Saturday.

The 31-year-old, together with Laura Muir, delivered Scotland's first individual world indoor medals in 25 years at the event in Birmingham as she enjoyed a fine third-place finish in the 400 metres.

Doyle travelled to the event on the back of retaining her British Athletics Indoor Championship title last month, and having finished second at last weekend's Mßller Indoor Grand Prix in Glasgow, where she also set a 400m indoor native record.

After finishing second in her heat with a time of 52.31 seconds behind Jamaica's Stephenie Ann McPherson, Doyle produced a quicker time of 52.15 in the semi-final to seal her place in the final.

Battling at the break with Shakima Wimbley of the United States, the Olympic 4x400m bronze medallist held her form for an attrition-like second lap, and maintained position to hold off the challenge of Poland’s Justyna Swiety-Ersetic on the home straight for a well-deserved individual world medal in a time of 51.60.

That was a season's best and a time that was close to her own national record and completed an extra special success for Doyle, who has previously medalled at world indoor and outdoor championships in relay events.

Afterwards she said: "I've always won medals in the relays but to win one on my own in an individual 400m is very special and means a lot.

"It's not my preferred event so to do this is incredible. This adds another accolade to my collection, which is just amazing."

Doyle will be one of Team Scotland's brightest medal hopes for the Commonwealth Games, which begin on the Gold Coast in Australia next month.
