A DREAM turned into a nightmare for Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts on Saturday as their match was abandoned after their striker was rushed to hospital.

Just minutes after scoring the opening goal of the game against Edinburgh United, Callum Strang contested a high ball and landed on his back, with his arm outstretched.

His bicep “ballooned” in size and an ambulance was called, with the striker now facing 12 weeks on the sidelines with a humerus fracture.

Callum told Press Sport: “It felt like my bicep had been ripped out of my arm.

“As I went up for a header, I came down and landed on my back with my arm out straight.

“I didn’t think anything of it but then my bicep ballooned and I couldn’t move my hand.

“At first, with the shock and adrenaline, it was fine. But as they wore off though it started getting painful.”

Club captain Ryan O’Connor and team-mate Craig Paterson sat with him in hospital, with O’Connor accompanying him in the ambulance on the way to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.

“I can’t thank them enough for that,” Callum added.

“We’ve got a cracking dressing room with a really tight-knit group of boys.

“The recovery starts now. The club have got everything in place to help me as much as possible and I couldn’t ask for a better bunch to be honest.”

Callum had provided the perfect start for Lee Richardson’s side on eight minutes after turning his man in the box and firing home into the bottom corner of the net.

Joy soon turned to agony for Richardson, as he watched Strang’s “horrible landing” with the Alex Jack Cup first round game being abandoned on 15 minutes.

He said: “I knew it was a bad one.

“We phoned the paramedics and they told us not to move him at all.

“His bicep was massive and his elbow wasn’t facing the right way.

“It’s never a nice thing to see. He’s a strong character though and he’ll come back fighting.

“It’s his first step up to senior level and he’s put his heart into it.

“He’s a hometown boy and he wants to show he can play at this level and he had started the season really well. We’re gutted for him.”
