William Hill Scottish Cup, first round replay:

Kelty Hearts 3

Dalbeattie Star 1

A WONDER strike from Stuart Cargill on Saturday set Kelty Hearts on their way to an historic Scottish Cup second round tie.

Thomas Courts’ side, who had never before progressed beyond the first round of the tournament, will go to SPFL League Two side Peterhead later this month after overcoming Dalbeattie Star.

Hearts, who defeated Civil Service Strollers 4-0 on Tuesday in the league, took control of the tie from the moment Cargill’s stunner hit the net in the fourth minute.

Nodding on a clearance out of defence, the team’s top goalscorer got the better of his marker to latch on to the ball, and then unleashed a magnificent shot from around 25 yards.

Brian Ritchie then headed home Conrad Courts’ corner a minute from the break before, moments later, Stephen Husband’s classy finish after Ritchie sent him clear added a third goal.

Although the visitors grabbed a consolation in the second half, Kelty progressed, and their delighted boss said: “We prepared all week to be in the next round, and we knew that we had the quality and experience, but it was all about delivering on the day.

“It really is something to savour. Hopefully the romance of the Scottish Cup can produce a fairytale for us.”

East of Scotland League, Conference A:

Oakley United 1

Musselburgh Athletic 2

RICHARD FOX felt his severely-depleted squad deserved at least a point after they fell to a late defeat against Musselburgh Athletic.

With nine players, including three first-choice defenders, unavailable, the Blairwood Park boss fielded himself against the 2015 Scottish Junior Cup finalists.

Although they fell behind to Mathu King’s 20th minute opener, Oakley levelled six minutes later thanks to Derek Murray’s superb free kick.

That looked like earning the hosts at least a point but, with only 10 minutes to go, a penalty by Nathan Evans took the points back to East Lothian.

Fox commented: “I’m disappointed with the defeat because I felt we deserved something from the game but the boys gave me everything.

“For the whole of the second half, I thought we looked comfortable and were sharp going forward but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Conference B:

Dalkeith Thistle 2 Crossgates Primrose 1

PRIMROSE lost the first of two games in four games in Conference B at Dalkeith on Saturday but returned in style at Dunipace on Tuesday night.

Goals from Ryan McQueenie and Darren McGlashen, despite Scott Hynd’s late strike, saw Alan Campbell’s lose out at King’s Park but they bounced back in style under the lights in Stirlingshire.

Hynd’s first half double in 22 and 33 minutes helped Crossgates lead 2-1 at the break at Westfield Park, before two goals in the last four minutes by Andy Watt and Dale Allan sealed a fine 4-1 success.

Football Nation Qualifying Cup, second round:

Peebles Rovers 5

Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 1

TEN-man Swifts bowed out of the cup after losing to Peebles Rovers.

Lee Duffy’s side fell behind when Cammy Slater opened the scoring after 13 minutes and, just before the half hour, they lost Brodie Hamilton to a red card.

Grant Wilson doubled Rovers’ lead and, although Ally Griffin pulled one back, Wilson grabbed his second to restore the hosts’ two-goal lead before a David Wilson double after the break sealed Swifts’ fate.

Scottish Junior Cup, second round:

Newmains United 0 Rosyth 1

ROSYTH boss Brian Muirhead believes his team are showing promising signs after his 10-man side progressed to round two.

Gregg Page pounced on a roll-out from the Newmains goalkeeper to give his side a 21st minute lead but, five minutes later, Mark Higgins was shown a straight red card.

Despite going down to 10 men, Rosyth stood firm to reach round three, and Muirhead said: “Over the last four or five weeks, there have been definite signs that we’ve started to become more of a team. We defended as a team, they battled for each other and showed a lot of character.”
