A DUNFERMLINE gymnastics club have enjoyed a double dose of success after bagging accolades at both a national competition and awards ceremony.

Carnegie Spartans, whose Spartans Resurrection Display Team famously wowed the nation to reach the Britain's Got Talent semi-finals three years ago, were in the medals at the Scottish Floor and Vault Championships before coach Fiona Ashton-Jones was feted at the Scottish Gymnastics Awards.

Both events were held on November 9 and, in the former at Perth's Bell's Sports Centre, all of their 12-strong squad came away having reached the podium at the event, which was for beginner and intermediate competitors.

There were four Spartans members competing in the under-eight age group and leading the medal haul was Joey Blair who, in addition to winning a beginners' silver, claimed team silver alongside Harrison Smith, Cameron Quoi and Angus Kerr.

In the under-10 age group, Woody O'Rourke claimed the under-10 beginners' title and team gold, while Lochlan Walker claimed the individual silver medal as well as team gold.

There were also team golds for Kai Stewart and Finn Arbuthnott, while Innes Arbuthnott and Irvine Wilson were awarded intermediate under-10 gold and silver medals respectively, as well as team golds.

In the under-12 category, Ewan Knox rounded off a superb competition for the Spartans by becoming the beginners' champion, before coach Fiona, who has previously helped at Commonwealth Games, World Championships and European Games events, added further silverware for the club later that evening at the governing body's annual prizegiving in Edinburgh.

She was rewarded for a 20-year association with the club, which has included judging as well as coaching, and volunteering at Scottish Gymnastics' events for around 14 of those, by being named as the Volunteer of the Year.

Fiona was chosen ahead of Emily Richardson, of Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club and Lindsay Rutherford, of the City of Edinburgh Gymnastics Club, at an awards ceremony that also saw Acrobay's Suzanne Fraser named as Coach of the Year.
