Dunfermline Athletic Under-21s 1-0 Bayside Ladies, Scottish Women's Football League Cup

DUNFERMLINE claimed local derby bragging rights at the weekend as they edged out Bayside Ladies in their Scottish Women's Football League Cup tie on Sunday.

After Bayside's opener with Dryburgh Athletic under-21s had been called off due to the weather, this was a first outing of the campaign for Ross Wortley's team at the Fleet Grounds, against a home side that had won their opener at Buchan seven days previously.

The opening goal fell the Pars' way in the first half, with Caitlin Wilson scrambling the ball home, and they managed to successfully defend their lead to move to the top of the group.

Their coach, Aaron Robertson, said: "Every player in a Pars shirt should be very proud of their performances today as we restricted Bayside to very little chances, and when they did get through, our keeper pulled off a brilliant one-on-one save.

"We were holding on a bit towards the end, but like last week, we defended well and didn't look like losing a goal."

His Bayside counterpart, Ross Wortley, commented: "To be fair, it was only our third game. We've had two friendlies, but this was our first competitive game.

"In the first half, you could tell we were a bit rusty. We've not been together for that long, and the other team are a bit more established.

"But, in the second half, I thought we were fantastic. I felt we had most of the play but just couldn't score. Especially in the last minutes, they defended for their lives.

"In the second half, we just seemed to click. The girls are disappointed that they lost, but not too disappointed because of the way they played."

Montrose 5 Dunfermline Athletic 5, SWF Championship North

Athletic's ladies shared the spoils in a 10-goal thriller at Montrose in their league opener on Sunday.

After beating BSC Glasgow in the SWF Championship Cup, they travelled to Angus with confidence but, despite hitting the woodwork early on, they fell a goal behind.

Brodie-Rigby Wilson, who hit a hat-trick against BSC, quickly brought the Pars level but, incredibly, Montrose replied within a minute thanks to a superb dipping shot that snuck in under the bar.

Carol Fraser's header brought the visitors level for a second time before she gave them the lead with a powerful strike over the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

Alix Moodie's superb free-kick gave Dunfermline a two-goal advantage at the interval, but that was to be wiped out in a stunning 10-minute period for the hosts.

After pulling a goal back in 65 minutes, they scored twice more to take the lead, but the Pars responded when Moodie's cross, which caused confusion in the box, ended up in the net to salvage an incredible draw.

This weekend, they return to action in the second round of the Championship Cup, against Dundee West, with a 2pm kick-off at the Fleet Grounds.

Kelty Hearts, who were out of action at the weekend, host Dryburgh Athletic at New Central Park at 2.15pm, while Bayside are due to play Dryburgh's under-21s in the Scottish Women’s Football League Cup.

Kick off at Dalgety Bay Sports Centre is at 4.15pm.
