CAROLINE WEIR scored a memorable 12th international goal as Scotland brought the curtain down on a disappointing European Championship qualifying campaign.

The 25-year-old Manchester City star, alongside Everton skipper, and former St Columba's High School pupil, Lucy Graham, travelled with the squad to Cyprus last week for matches against the hosts and Portugal.

Under the charge of interim boss Stuart McLaren, following Shelley Kerr's resignation in December, the Scots went into the games already out of contention to make next summer's finals in England.

Having qualified for Euro 2017 – Scotland's first major tournament, in which Dunfermline-born Caroline hit the decisive goal in a 1-0 success over Spain, their first finals victory – and the 2019 World Cup, the national side failed to qualify from Group E.

Damaging, back-to-back defeats away to Finland and Portugal in October and November last year left their qualification hopes hanging by a thread by the time the Finns came to Easter Road in December, where a last-gasp, 1-0 win saw them knock Scotland out.

Having hammered Cyprus 8-0 at the start of the campaign, the Scots – featuring both Weir and Graham in the starting line-up – got back to winning ways in style by hitting double figures against their hosts in Larnaca last Friday.

In an incredible 10- rout, Erin Cuthbert and Martha Thomas had Scotland 2-0 ahead before former Dunfermline High pupil Weir got in on the act in the 25th minute.

Having scored a sensational chip to seal a 3-0 derby win over Manchester United for her club earlier this month, she showcased the talents once more that saw her named as Scotland's women's player of the year for 2020.

After picking the ball up from a throw-in around 30 yards out, she played a one-two to receive it again at the edge of the penalty area, jinked her way beyond three Cypriot defenders before lifting a delicate chip over the advancing goalkeeper, from a tight angle, for her team's third goal.

By the time she and Graham were substituted at at the interval, Cuthbert and Kirsty Hanson had further increased Scotland's lead, which was doubled in the second half thanks to further goals from Thomas, Lizzie Arnot, Claire Emslie and Jane Ross, who netted a double.

Weir and Graham were both selected again from the start, winning their 77th and 10th senior caps respectively, against Portugal on Tuesday, a game that was switched from Scotland because of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Despite dominating in the opening half an hour, Ana Capeta put Portugal ahead and, although the Scots pushed hard for a leveller, Fatima Pinto netted a second in injury time to condemn them to defeat.
