THREE-TIME British Touring Car Championship winner Gordon Shedden will return to the grid for the 2021 season.

The 42-year-old, who left the series in 2017 to compete in the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR), has agreed a deal to rejoin Team Dynamics, it was announced today.

'Flash', who picked up the BTCC drivers' crown in 2012, 2015 and 2016, will once again link-up with the team that has brought him glittering success.

After making his debut in the series at his home circuit of Knockhill in 2001, Shedden has claimed 48 race victories, all of which have come in Team Dynamics-run Honda machinery.

Shedden, who will make his 350th BTCC start in the third race of the opening weekend at Thruxton, due to take place over May 8-9, replaces Dan Cammish, who was released by Team Dynamics earlier this week.

He had helped out his old team in February last year during pre-season testing, when Matt Neal was recovering from a motorbike injury, and Shedden commented: "I can't wait to get back in the car!

"I have kept in touch with the team throughout and obviously jumped in the car early in 2020, when Matt was injured, and it felt great.

"That was the first time I had driven the new car and it felt right from the off. I've been keeping an eye on the Championship, and it looks mega competitive, but my fight and determination is as high as it's ever been, so I'll be giving it my all."

In an interview with Press Sport in 2019, Shedden described the chance to compete in WTCR as "a chance to go and explore the world, and see another championship" but left the door open to a BTCC return, by noting: "Motorsport is a small world, and I’m sure many paths will cross at some stage."

Neal, Team Dynamics director, said: "It’s great to have Flash back in the car; he knows the team and he knows the way we work.
"He showed last year that he hadn’t lost his pace, so we are expecting great things of him, no pressure!"

When the action gets underway, Shedden will go head-to-head with his brother-in-law, Rory Butcher, who has joined Toyota Gazoo Racing UK for the coming season.
