YOUNGSTERS from West Fife are preparing to lace up their running shoes and welcome the return of a popular event this weekend.

The Duloch Junior Parkrun, which was launched in August 2019, will make its comeback this Sunday having been halted because of COVID-19.

With support and funding from both Fife Council and Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, the event at Duloch Country Park was first held on August 4 2019 and took place each Sunday at 9.30am until lockdown restrictions were imposed last March due to the pandemic.

However, organisers have now been given the go-ahead for its resumption.

A free, weekly event for youngsters aged between four and 14, the junior parkrun allows children to run, jog or walk a 2K course, which they can complete themselves or be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Although the maximum age of those who can take part currently is 10 due to COVID-19 guidelines, the event is held in a safe and friendly environment that encourages children to take part in physical activity, and offers both them and adults volunteering opportunities.

A 5K parkrun, which takes place in Pittencrieff Park, remains suspended due to ongoing restrictions but it is hoped it will be given the green light to resume soon.
