JUNIOR athletes with Pitreavie AAC have been hitting the track in a flurry of competitions in recent weeks – and have achieved several podium finishes.

In early May, the club's under-12s competed through a national leaderboard in a locally-hosted virtual $J Studios SUPERteams event, before heading to Aberdeen for their first such 'away' competition since the outbreak of COVID-19.

The national final, consisting of a 75 metres sprint, long jump, turbo javelin and 4x100m relay, followed a day later by a Youth Development League meet for under-20 athletes in Grangemouth, brought Pitreavie plenty of success.

That began with the virtual SUPERteams event as the girls' 'A' team finished second with 1,680 points – with Olivia Pearson and Bonnie Seath contributing 435 and 430 respectively – and the mixed team came joint-third, with Dunfermline Track and Field, on 1,711, while the boys' 'A' team placed a creditable fifth on 1,633, with Fraser Muir scoring 447.

At the final, a number of silver medals were brought home, with the girls' 'A' team – who had scored a total of 1,143 points – missing out on gold by just two points to Airdrie Harriers, while Pitreavie's 'B' squad finished fifth with 1,045, and the 'C' team 19th.

A composite team of two boys and two girls, despite not scoring in all events, competed well as the boys enjoyed a fine day, with the 'A' team finishing second, and the 'B' squad 10th, with 1,241 and 994 points respectively.

A number of fine individual performances contributed to the medal successes, with Fraser Muir finishing as the third-placed boy overall, scoring 237 points.

His lightning-fast sprint in 11.03 seconds gained his team 95 points, and his 4.10 metres long jump 98. However, in a heart-stopping moment, his race was recalled with a potential re-run on the cards, only for officials to confirm that wasn't needed after conferring.

Michael Massey finished as the 10th boy with an excellent 208 points; nine-year-old Reuben Blake finished a high 13th in the boys' rankings, due to his astonishing 3.89m long jump; Isla Gourlay, for the girls' 'A' team, was the sixth girl overall, with 204 points; and Bonnie Seath placed eighth on 195 points.

The young athletes followed this up with another great day in Grangemouth at the Scotland East Youth Development League, with the club finishing second behind Edinburgh AC out of nine teams.

Fraser Muir shone once again, smashing his 75m sprint PB from the previous day in Aberdeen with a time of 10.93, while Sophie Mackie and Mia Fairweather placed first and second in the girls' race.

Frazer Lees, Ross Allan and Nieve Hannell all ran PBs, with Nieve 11 seconds faster than her run the previous month.

Laurie Hunter and Katie Thomson also gained new bests in the under-15 100m, while Ariane Bailie, who usually prefers hill running and the 1500m, ran 2:23.59 in the 800m, allowing her and Lily Simon to place as the second- and third-top athletes.

There was also a first place for Bruce Robb in the shot put – his very first throw for Pitreavie – which measured a fine distance of 12.19m.
