Tennent’s Caledonia Region League, Division One:

Dunfermline 11 Orkney 7

DUNFERMLINE skipper Cammy Dunn has hailed their “great result” over Orkney as one that has kept them in title contention.

The McKane Park side produced an outstanding effort to topple the Tennent’s Caledonia Region League, Division One leaders last Saturday and leapfrog them at the summit.

An early converted try put the visitors ahead but two penalties from Adam Fraser, one in each half, brought Dunfermline to within a point of their opponents with six minutes left.

Then, in what could prove to be a pivotal moment in the season, Owen Brown (pictured) crashed over the whitewash for an all-important winning score and give his side their eighth win of the season.

Ahead of this afternoon’s home fixture with Aberdeen Wanderers (2pm), Dunfermline lead the way by a point – albeit having played two games more – and Dunn said: “It was a great result.

“It was a tough one, a very tough one to keep hold of. The game was very back-and-forth, with neither team giving much away, I was still in bits on Monday morning!

“It was a good, physical game and it was kind of what we expected. We had to be on top of it, and I’m glad we were and we got the result.

“The messages this week have been lose this game, and it (the title) is over for us. We missed a few kicks which would’ve taken away their losing bonus point, which would have been a better result for us, but the win was important.

“Our focus is on us. The guys are really buzzing to go this week.

“I don’t know if Orkney have been under this kind of pressure before, but they know they have to get results now.

“It’ll be interesting to see how they respond.”

Meanwhile, Dunfermline’s third XV lost out 31-12 to Hillfoots second XV in Caledonia Midlands Region League, Division Four, while Dunfermline thirds and Rosyth Sharks saw their Division Three fixtures at Dundee Rugby seconds and Grangemouth Stags seconds postponed.

This afternoon, Dunfermline seconds host Grangemouth Stags seconds at 2pm, while the third XV entertain Stobswell at the same time.
