Tennent’s Caledonia Region League, Division One:

Dunfermline 68

Aberdeen Wanderers 5

DUNFERMLINE skipper Cammy Dunn believes that confidence is building within the squad after they registered their fifth successive victory on Saturday.

The McKane Park outfit avenged September’s defeat to Aberdeen Wanderers with a clinical and emphatic performance that maintains their place at the top of the table.

Bolstered by a thrilling win over previous leaders Orkney the weekend before, the home side were eager to make amends for the 24-20 loss to their opponents earlier in the season, and did so with a win that saw them secure a bonus point by the half-hour mark.

Stuart Brown’s team were fast out the blocks, with Hamish Wood crossing the whitewash after only three minutes, a score that was added to by Adam Fraser, who converted both tries.

Further scores by Angus Thomson and Wood secured the bonus point with 30 minutes on the clock, before James Brough and Graeme Low also crossed to take Dunfermline’s try count to six by half-time.

All tries ended with Fraser’s boot adding the extra points.

Within a minute of the restart, Wood completed his hat-trick to help the hosts into a 49-0 lead and, although Aberdeen did cross for a try of their own, Harvey Gardiner’s unconverted score, plus two from Fraser and Matthew Wilson, completed a fine day’s work.

“It was very pleasing,” Dunn said of their performance.

“The bonus point was an extra help and we got the bonus point within the first half an hour. In the second half of the first half, we started to see more ascendency, have more control and concede less penalties.

“We were in our groove and scored an intercept try. Looking at the other team’s body language, we were in a good place compared to them. Our accuracy was good, and our set-piece was good at the scrum and in the line-out.

“The confidence is there but the message from me has been about the next job. It’s always about the cliché of taking it one game at a time.”

Up next for Dunfermline, who lead Orkney by two points having played two games more, is a trip to Ellon, who are fourth despite having only played seven matches.

One of those was a 22-3 defeat at McKane in October, and Dunn added: “We had a good performance against them earlier in the season.

“A bit like us last week, they’ll be looking for some revenge, and to right a few wrongs from the game down here.

“We’ve had some good results at home; it’s time to make sure we get some on the road.”
