Tennent's Caledonia Region League, Division One:

Dunfermline 64 Caithness 14

DUNFERMLINE rounded off their league season with a bonus-point win over Caithness last Saturday to finish at the top of the table.

But the McKane Park outfit's first XV face an anxious wait over the next few weeks to see if their efforts will be enough to keep them there.

The wait is now on to see if Orkney, who are second in the table and won on Saturday against Grangemouth Stags to move 10 points behind Dunfermline with four games to go, can get the points they need to finish first.

Stuart Brown's team won their eighth game from eight on their own pitch on March 5 to complete a superb second half of the campaign, which saw them collect victories in each of their nine matches since the beginning of November.

The last time they were beaten was at Caithness in October but, on an emotion-filled afternoon that saw a minute's silence held in memory of former player and club member Alistair Collie, Dunfermline made sure they were on the right end of the scoreline this time.

Owen Brown scored the first of three converted first half tries – the extras being added by Adam Fraser – in the opening period, with the others coming from Harvey Gardiner and Lewis Cumming in the final minute of the half.

Within 17 minutes of the restart, three more tries, two of which were converted, from Gardiner, who scored two of them, and Angus Thomson, along with a Fraser penalty, put Dunfermline 43-0 up before Caithness responded with two converted scores of their own.

In the final six minutes, Ethan Morgan – either side of a score from Calum White – crossed twice for the hosts to complete an emphatic victory, leaving them waiting to see if favours elsewhere can help them become champions.

"We went into half-time with three tries on the board, which was a bit flattering," skipper Cammy Dunn commented.

"The first half was challenging. They were physical and a good team to host; they played some good stuff and were solid.

"By the time we scored the fourth, you could see their spirit became a bit diminished. It was impressive how clinical we managed to stay."

On the team's home record, Cammy commented: "I mentioned that last Thursday (at training) and on Saturday. We've not managed it during my involvement with the seniors, so I'm proud we've been able to come away unbeaten at home. 'Fortress McKane', as we call it, has become a fort again.

"This is the first season in years we've not have any cancellations; we've finished on schedule. All we can do is wait and hope. We've put ourselves in the best position we can; hopefully, we've done enough."
