KELTY HEARTS assistant boss Kevin McDonald has said they will "have a go" at Montrose in what he described as a "massive" match in their hunt for the play-offs.

The New Central Park outfit head north to Links Park having picked up seven points from their last nine available, including three on Tuesday night, courtesy of a 3-2 win over Edinburgh City.

That put them to within two points of Stewart Petrie's side, who are directly above them in the League One table, but who fell out of the promotion play-off places after Alloa Athletic defeated Annan Athletic.

Whilst table-toppers Falkirk and second-placed Hamilton Academical, who meet this afternoon at the Falkirk Stadium, are well clear of the rest, just four points separate Alloa, in third, and Kelty, who sit sixth.

Michael Tidser's men can leap above Stewart Petrie's Gable Endies by recording a second win of the season at Links Park, and with Alloa hosting Cove Rangers, three points above Kelty in fourth, it is set to be a big weekend in the race for places in the Championship promotion play-offs.

"Saturday's massive," McDonald told Press Sport.

"We did well up there earlier in the season (winning 2-0 in August) but then they beat us here just before Christmas, and that probably started off our bad run to be honest, because we actually played quite well on the day and got beat 1-0.

"We've won up there before so we'll go and have a go.

"We've got a tough run after that because we play Falkirk here, and we all know Falkirk are a good side, so Saturday because massive for us, but I think every team beats everybody at any given time.

"We'll stay with the pack as long as we can and we know we'll pick points up, so fingers crossed we can just keep into that play-off spot."

On-loan Hamilton forward Joe McGlynn, who netted twice against Edinburgh midweek, commented: "We said it after the game that we're in a good position now to kick-on.

"Saturday especially is a big game for us, to go away to Montrose and try and put a statement down for a win, and show that we can go anywhere and win."

McDonald, meanwhile, was full of praise for McGlynn's contribution to the cause in the three games he's played for the 'Maroon Machine' so far, and for the team recovering from going a goal down to beat bottom side City on Tuesday night.

"He probably should've got a goal at Edinburgh when we played through there, and then on Saturday he did well again," he said of McGlynn after the game.

"His performances have been brilliant and he's just getting to know the group. He's probably not really trained much, so he's getting to know the group, how we play and different players. He's done great and I'm delighted for him getting his two goals tonight.

"I'd like to know a stat, I'm not quite sure what it is, but I don't think we have done that for a while, in terms of going behind and then managing to claw it back.

"We've maybe felt a bit sorry for ourselves and not managed to do that, and then probably lost goals off the back of pushing to try and get back into it.

"It was a good reaction. I actually thought we started the game really well. Even at one each, I thought we probably doing really well, and then after we scored, it went a little bit flat for a spell.

"But three points is the main thing."
