ATHLETIC play their final home match of the Championship season this afternoon when they welcome Inverness Caledonian Thistle to KDM Group East End Park.

Both teams have plenty to play for in the penultimate match of the league campaign as they aim to make sure they avoid finishing second bottom and in the relegation play-off place.

Ahead of the match, here's our big game preview.

Form guide

The stakes remain high for both clubs.

Dunfermline's scoreless draw last weekend with Queen's Park left them sixth in the table, and six points clear of second bottom spot, and the relegation play-off place.

That is currently occupied by Queen's Park, who are also eight goals worse off than the Pars, so a point for James McPake's men this afternoon would ensure they can't drop to ninth place.

Dunfermline Press:

It would take an unlikely sequence of results for that to happen, especially as they go to Ayr United - one place and one point below them - on the final day, whilst they also hold a five-point cushion over eighth-placed Inverness.

The Pars have drawn two and lost one of their last three games, having won their previous three prior to that sequence, and have picked up five points from the last nine available at home.

Inverness are just one point above Queen's Park - who play already-relegated Arbroath - and were beaten at home by Raith Rovers last time out.

However, before that, Duncan Ferguson's side had picked up crucial wins against both Arbroath and Queen's Park, and six of their nine league wins this term have come away from home.

Dunfermline have won five of their 11 victories at home.

Recent meetings

All three of the previous meetings of the teams this term have ended in draws.

Chris Hamilton struck a late equaliser for the Pars at the Caledonian Stadium in September, before Lewis McCann did likewise in another 1-1 draw, at East End, in November, a game in which Dunfermline rattled the woodwork eight times.

In February, the teams fought out a stalemate in the Highlands, leaving Athletic winless against Inverness in their past five encounters.

Their last win over the Caley Jags was a 2-1 success away from home in November 2021, whilst their last home victory came in October 2020, when they won 3-1.

According to Soccerbase, Inverness hold the upper hand in the head-to-head record.

They have won 17 league games to Dunfermline's nine, with 19 ending in a draw, whilst, in all competitions, Inverness have won 19 meetings to Pars' 11, with 22 games finishing all-square.

Team news

James McPake has revealed Ewan Otoo will miss out, and is set to have a consultation on Monday, with a knee problem.

"It’ll probably be too quick for Craig Wighton and Aaron Comrie. It’ll be potentially next week for them," the boss said.

"Paul (Allan) is back involved and will be in the squad and Mal (Malachi Fagan-Walcott) is okay.

"Ewan has got a consultation on Monday in Glasgow. The scans have been sent to London as well, so we’ve got two surgeons looking at that at the minute.

"So, we’ll have a clear indication whether it’s surgery for him on Monday."

From the dugout

James McPake: "As I have said before, there is an expectancy at this football club, no matter what league that you are in, anytime that you are playing at home you have to perform.

"There’s a way of getting after teams, creating chances and this place can be good when it is like that. There can be moans and groans from the crowd when that is not happening.

"We agree with that. We work all week to perform on a Saturday home and away. We take big crowds away from home and when we are at home we always have a decent crowd in here.

"We need to turn up, we need to perform and whether we were out of any fears or in limbo, all we could do is win the next two games to be wherever we were on the league but with no pressures of going up or down there is still a lot to play for and we have got to do that."
