Rosyth Sharks 43 Waid Academy FP 7
Rosyth Sharks took another step towards consolidating third spot in Caledonia Midlands Region League Division Three with a bonus point win over Waid Academy FP.
Mark Love's side ran out 43-7 winners at Harley Street on Saturday, leaving them 20 points clear of Grangemouth Stags second XV in fourth, and 10 adrift of Stirling County third XV.
After a sluggish start to the match, veteran flanker Bryan Aspinal scored the first of two tries for the Sharks after 20 minutes, which saw him named man of the match, but they made tough work of finding the whitewash during the first half.
David Reynolds did eventually cross for Rosyth before vice-captain Ryan Wallace, on his 50th appearance for the club, scored a try of his own, and successfully kicked each conversion.
A well-deserved converted try for the visitors saw them trail 17-7 at the interval but, after the turnaround, Jamie Hance, Alex Conyers, Stuart Bailey and Aspinal all crossed for further scores.
"We were slow to get going in the first half," Sharks head coach, Mark Love, commented.
"This was down to a combination of poor handling on our part, and strong defensive work by Waid, but once we got the try, we started working better as a team.
"But, disappointingly, our defence went to sleep just before half time, allowing Waid an easy score.
"In the second half, we continued to put Waid under pressure, especially in the scrums, forcing the referee to move to adopt a variation of rugby laws that reduced the driving distance to 1.5 metres, and ultimately the scrums went uncontested as Waid players went off injured.
"We made the game hard for ourselves at times, but the main thing is we got the five point win, and the game was another step towards consolidating third place in the league."
The two teams will have a chance for a rematch this weekend when Rosyth travel to face Waid once more, with kick off at 3pm.
