Shinty: Aberdour knocked out of Bullough Cup by Glasgow Mid Argyll

Glasgow Mid Argyll seconds were the visitors to Silver Sands in the second round of the Bullough Cup, and returned home after completing a 9-1 success.

However the home side, who play in Mowi South Division Two, one tier below their opponents, whose firsts were also inactive at the weekend, invited three players into their pool who had played the previous night in an under-14 match.

David MacDougall netted in the opening period for Aberdour, but they trailed 3-1 at the interval, with James MacLeod, with a brace, and Cailean MacInnes on target for Glasgow Mid Argyll.

Doubles from Ryan MacKenzie and Zac Menzies, and efforts from Conal MacDiarmid and Callum Robb, completed the scoring, but 'Dour praised the efforts of their young players, posting on Facebook: "Archie, Magnus and Lucas who all only recently turned 13 have been training with the older players for the last few weeks, and are really improving.

"It's great to have them involved and even better to see them welcomed and encouraged by the older players."

Their involvement ensured that the club's firsts were able to fulfil their latest Mowi South Division One fixture at Lochside Rovers.

Travelling with a bare minimum of 12 players, and missing some key squad members, they held out, whilst creating chances of their own, until the 79th minute, when Joe MacVicar scored the decisive goal for the hosts in Oban.

Aberdour are third in the league, with six points from seven matches, and are next in action on June 7 away to Inveraray in the Balliemore Cup, whilst the seconds return to league fixtures this Saturday at Tayforth.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the club's women's side claimed their third draw of the season in a dramatic six-goal thriller with Strathglass.

The visitors took a two-goal lead into the interval in their WCA (Women's Camanachd Association) Mowi National League clash, but Rebecca Thorington reduced the arrears in the 53rd minute with a low drive beyond the goalkeeper.

Three minutes later, Rowan Cooper's sharp finish brought the home team level, only to concede a third goal with 11 minutes to go.

However, just as it looked like they'd be defeated, Katie Booth, with 15 seconds left, fired home a thunderous equaliser to level the game and seal Aberdour's third point of the season.

The result came two weeks after they had opened their WCA Mowi Challenge Cup campaign with a resounding 12-0 win over Uddingston.

Booth netted five, whilst Thorington scored four, of their goals, with Cooper, Kirsty Duff and Esme Lindsay adding the others.

Aberdour are scheduled to visit Strathspey on Sunday in the league.
