Dunfermline hosts nine high schools for national water polo event

Carnegie Leisure Centre was the host venue for the 2025 Scottish Schools Open Championships, where more than 100 pupils took part.

Dunfermline, Queen Anne, Woodmill and Inverkeithing high schools were all involved, alongside Portobello High School, Wallace High School, James Gillespie's High School, Balerno High School, and High School of Dundee.

Four West Fife high schools were amongst those taking part. (Image: David Wardle.) Each team played four matches, which in an initial group stage, with Queen Anne, Woodmill, Inverkeithing and Dunfermline placing fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Woodmill and Queen Anne lost out in the quarter-finals of the Championship - won by Portobello - to High School of Dundee and James Gillespie's respectively, but Dunfermline were winners of the plate prize, with Inverkeithing second.

James Lees, of Dunfermline High, was the event's top scorer with 10 goals, with Euan Ferrier, of Queen Anne, just behind him on nine.

Richie Metcalfe, secretary of Dunfermline Water Polo Club, said: "It went very well.

"There was nine schools playing so, potentially, over 100 kids in attendance.

The event proved popular with the participating pupils. (Image: David Wardle.) "Three Dunfermline high schools, and Inverkeithing, put teams in, which I think is a first where we've had them all there at the same event.

"We had somebody coaching, or helping coach, each of the schools as well.

"The day went off very smoothly. There was some good games and I think it went off very well. Everyone seemed to come away with a positive view."
