A West Fife athletics star has said she "wasn't expecting" to produce a pair of record-breaking performances in races featuring Olympic medallists.

Sophie Thomas, who competes for Dunfermline Track and Field, travelled to Birmingham at the weekend to take part in the Novuna UK Athletics Championships.

The prestigious event brought together top athletes seeking national titles and selection places for the European Athletics Championships, which take place at the same venue in August.

Sophie, 18, ran in the women's 100 metres and 200m, reaching the final of both, and set two new Scottish under-20 age group records.

The talented sprinter, a former pupil at Dollar Academy, donned a Great Britain vest and produced some memorable performances.

Over the shorter distance, having progressed in her heat, she finished second in her semi-final - behind three-time Olympic 4x100m medallist, and 2019 200m world champion, Dina Asher-Smith - in 11.44 seconds.

That was a new personal best, breaking her own Scottish record at under-20 level, which she achieved at last month's Loughborough International, and she went on to better that in the final.

In a race also featuring Amy Hunt, a 4x100m silver medallist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and runner-up in the World Championships 200m last year, Sophie finished in sixth place with a time of 11.32.

"I'm very happy," she said afterwards.

"I definitely wasn't expecting it, to make it to the final at all, as an under-20, but I really liked the atmosphere, really liked being in the same race as Amy Hunt and Dina Asher Smith.

"I had so much fun."

Not content with running a new national best in the 100m, Sophie followed that up by doing so in the 200m, which she said was her main focus for the weekend.

A Scottish under-20 indoor record holder, she placed second in her heat, with a new personal best of 23.24, 0.37 seconds behind Asher-Smith.

Sophie then shaved a further 0.14 seconds off that time, crossing the line in fifth place, with a time of 23.10.

She's now set to switch her attention to the upcoming England Athletics Outdoor Championships, which will double up as qualifiers for August's World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Oregon, USA.

She's achieved qualifying standard times in both the 100m and 200m and, speaking to Press Sport, Sophie said: "If I win English champs, which is world trials, then I'll go to Oregon in August to run in the world juniors.

"I've got the world standard for Great Britain.

"It was 23.5, and I ran 23.28 back in February, so I'm just aiming towards actually qualifying.

"Me and my coach have been working towards it for the past two years I think. It's definitely a big goal for us.

"After that, I'm obviously going to America (to study at the University of Connecticut, as part of an academic and athletics scholarship) , so, hopefully I can keep going there and enjoy it as well.

"It's quite a big journey.

"It's probably the biggest event there's going to be for me, the world champs. It's just crazy.

"For the past two years, we've known about it, and we've been training towards it, so, I'm really happy to see that my times are coming into place now.

"Hopefully I can make the final, but we'll just have to see how it all goes."
