Thousands of motorsport fans lapped up the sunshine and thrilling two-wheel action at Knockhill Racing Circuit at the weekend.

The British Superbike Championship returned to the iconic venue for its annual visit north of the border, and watched reigning double champion, Kyle Ryde, extend his lead at the top of the standings.

It took place over three days, from Friday to Sunday, for what was the biggest Superbikes event that Scotland's national motorsport centre has held, with 18 races taking place.

Six support classes were on show in addition to the main championship, and saw a total of 12 riders, including Rory Skinner, flying the flag for Scotland.

The Perth star finished fifth in the first of three races in the third round of the championship, with Ryde taking the chequered flag in first place, who did the same in race two.

Skinner, however, did not finish, but rallied for another fifth place in the finale, which was won by Scott Redding, leaving him sixth in the championship with 78 points, 76 behind pacesetter Ryde.

Ryde received one of two special awards which were presented on the final podium of the weekend.

He was handed the Niall Mackenzie King of the Hill Trophy, marking 30 years of the series, for having accumulated the most points of any rider throughout, whilst Bradley Ray was given the Steve Hislop Trophy for being the rider who set the fastest lap.

Stuart Gray, Knockhill director of events, said: "We have been blessed with fantastic weather over the weekend, and the action on track matched the weather!

"The action was edge of your seat drama and some of the overtakes were simply breathtaking.

"Every fan today witnessed some of the best riders in the world putting on a great show and wooed the crowd with top class motorcycle race action.

"A huge thanks go to all the fans for coming along in such numbers, and we look forward to welcoming them back at our next motorcycle event on July 26."

Scottish Championship Motorcycle Racing takes place at Knockhill over the weekend of July 25-26, whilst the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship arrives over August 8-9.
