PITREAVIE hurdler Eilidh Doyle endured mixed fortunes indoors as she bagged one medal but missed out on another at the weekend.

The 30-year-old 400 metres hurdles specialist was in action at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Serbia as she competed for Great Britain in the women's 400m and 4x400m relay, the latter of which brought her a silver medal.

The meet in Belgrade began on Friday and Doyle, who was victorious at the British Indoor Team Trials in Sheffield last month, had high hopes of challenging for a podium place but suffered a setback on the opening day of competition.

Having successfully come through for heat in the morning by winning her race, she was unable to follow that up in her semi-final despite leading for the majority of it.

A fast start from the Bath based star put her into a good position but she was pipped by both race winner, Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic, and Poland's Malgorzata Holub, with the finish line agonisingly close to finish third with just 0.7 seconds separating Doyle and Hejnova.

Despite that disappointment, she was back on the track on Sunday for the 4x400m relay and ended the competition on a high by winning a 12th major championship medal.

Doyle ran the opening leg and team-mates Philippa Lowe, Mary Iheke and Laviai Neilsen completed a strong showing to finish second behind a strong Polish team, including Holub, in a time of 3.31.05, 1.05 seconds ahead of third-placed Ukraine.

The Pitreavie star's medal collection, including last year's 4x400m relay bronze at the Rio Olympics, spans competitions at European, Commonwealth and World Championship level, and she said: "The plan was to go out well; I wanted to try and get them into the lead and try and keep it as clean as possible and try not to get us into a fighting battle.

"The girls all ran so well; for Mary and Philippa to be thrown into the 4x400m in their first senior international is a real baptism of fire. I thought it was a really composed and mature performance from all of us and I’m really proud."
