The West Fifers had high hopes of laying down a marker to their South Division One rivals as they target a challenge for promotion but an early penalty miss, followed by a 22nd minute opener for the visitors that fortuitously rebounded off a home defender and over their goalkeeper, took the wind out of their sails.

The first chance fell to Aberdour when Darren Coyle was felled in the area inside the opening minute but John Martin Philips saw his spot hit saved by Stephen Davidson before Daniel Madej put the visitors in front.

Aberdour fell two goals behind in 77 minutes through Lee Askew and although Kevin Latimer pulled a goal back and they finished the match strongly, they were unable to find the equaliser. However McColl told Press Sport that she was not too downbeat.

“When the game started we looked more in control and created chances but we didn’t finish them,” she said. “We were awarded a penalty but from that moment on we seemed to think that that was the way the game was going to go for us. Their goal was completely against the run of play and it took a bit of the wind out of our sails. Celtic wanted it and played well but we still had some good chances and good play.

“It was one of those games though where we know we can bring more to the table but we didn’t on Saturday.

“It’s not a great way to start the season but we’re not asking them for something they don’t have and hopefully we can change that this weekend.” Another tough assignment faces Aberdour this weekend as they travel to face Bute, who were in the division above last season.

Despite finishing bottom, Bute were offered the chance to stay in the National Division due to league reconstruction but turned it down.

McColl said, “It will be a tougher game on Saturday but I know that our team have more to give. If we had played the way we did in pre-season then we should’ve taken the two points, but it was our first competitive game and maybe we got a couple of things wrong. There are positives we can take; we finished the stronger of the teams and showed we can compete but it’s over 90 minutes that we need to do it.” Aberdour’s ladies also lost their opener against Badenoch & Strathspey by a score of 3-1 and this weekend the club’s seconds are back in action at Silver Sands against Glenorchy after their trip to Bute in South Division Two was cancelled.

Both the senior side and the seconds’ matches have a 2.30pm throw-up.
