The West Fifers paid the price for a slow start in their second South Division One match of the shinty season, where they fell two goals behind inside the opening eight minutes, on their way to a 3-0 defeat.

Robert Walker gave the islanders the lead in the fifth minute when his shot came off the post and spun over the line before he cut through the visiting defence and slotted the ball past Tom Bowerman for their second.

While Aberdour competed well in long spells, Ben Clarke made sure of the victory for Bute with 15 minutes remaining but McColl told Press Sport she was philosophical about her team’s performance against a side who were plying their trade in the National Division last season.

“It was always going to be tough and they started really quick and their sharpness, particularly in the midfield centre line, showed,” she said. “They’re maybe a wee bit above the level that we’ve been playing at and their experience showed. But our guys showed some good play as well and although we lost two very quick goals, we didn’t fall apart. We were down a couple of players who might’ve made a difference but we can only learn from it. There were positives to take; Andrew Fraser played his first game at the back since coming into the club and did well and we were lacking a couple of players to link the forward line that ended up with our defence and midfield coming under pressure. It was disappointing to lose but there are some games where you have to say that the opposition were better. We’ve played two teams who last season were above us but there’s still a long way to go.” There was better news for ’Dour’s seconds as they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Glenorchy in their South Division Two clash at Silver Sands.

Ruaridh Reid’s double for the home side was cancelled out by Duncan Buchanan and Andy MacLean and McColl added, “There were a lot of young players in the team and I believe that they were unlucky not to have won. I don’t think he’ll mind me saying this but Kevin Latimer couldn’t hit a barn door! He had a lot of chances but it was a really positive performance.

“It’s been a nice start for them so far this season and shows how far they’ve come.” Aberdour’s senior side are in cup action on Saturday as they visit Taynuilt in the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Celtic Society Cup, with throw-up at 1pm, while the seconds take on Col Glen at Silver Sands in the league at 2.30pm. The club’s ladies side visit Glasgow Mid-Argyll on Sunday at 12pm.
