On Saturday the Silver Sands side will host a Premiership shinty club for the first time in a competitive match as Inverary come calling for a Gregor Cameron Consultancy Celtic Society Cup quarter-final.

A 6-1 loss to Inverness in the Balliemore Cup first round was not the ideal preparation for the clash with the 20-time winners, who have also won the sport’s most prestigious competition, the Macaulay Cup, three times.

But McColl said, “I’ve told them to use this game as a great experience, play with pride and learn from it.

“We played them in Inverary two years ago and we did ourselves proud that day, and I don’t doubt that our guys will do that on Saturday.

“We’ve never had a full Premiership side come to Aberdour for a competitive game so it is very exciting.

“It’ll be a whole new challenge for us but they’ve undergone a few changes this year and are playing more younger players. You can’t really predict what will happen and we will set some wee individual targets that we can achieve and which would be positives for us.” Although her team will need to play better than they did against Inverness, McColl continued, “We lost four in the first half which meant it was going to be difficult to pull it back in the second, but we created a few opportunities and Jack Mitchell scored his second senior goal which was good. They were a bit sharper, physical and clever with the ball so those are things that we can work on. But our hitting in the midfield and forward areas has improved massively so it is coming together for us.” The club’s ladies fared better in their league match on Sunday as they won 4-0 against Oban despite being a player short. They are not in action this weekend. The first team’s match with Inverary starts at 1.30pm while the seconds travel to Oban Lorn in South Division Two, with throw-up at 2.30pm.
