WEST FIFE swimmers Oliver Carter and Cara Smyth made a splash by claiming medals at the recent Scottish Disability Sport (SDS) National Short Course Performance Championships.

The first event of the new year saw competitors from Disability Sport Fife (DSF) travel to Stirling for an event that offers Scotland's leading swimmers with a physical, sensory or learning disability the opportunity to compete over distances not normally available at the national championships, and experience swimming in a 50 metre pool with electronic timing.

Four DSF members took part in the meet, which saw 15 Scottish records set, and Oliver, of Carnegie Swimming Club, claimed a gold and silver medal, while InCAS swimmer Cara took home two bronze medals.

Oliver, who was Fife's leading swimmer on the day, swims in the S10 class and after excellent swims of 4:36.19 in the 400m freestyle and 28.22 in the 50m freestyle, won his medals in the multi-classification system as did Cara, who posted times of 5:29.97 in the 400m freestyle, 1:33.67 for 100m butterfly, 3:06.69 in the 200m IM and 1:16.64 in the 100m freestyle.

Although the retirement of Craig Rodgie and Craig Smith reduced the number of eligible DSF swimmers, it was still a successful meet for the Fife team, with Dalgety Bay's Kirsty Brunton also impressing.

Competing in the S8 category along with Steven McCormick of FINS, she recorded times of 2:29.88 in the 100m breaststroke, 52.23 in the 50m freestyle and 1:57.26 in the 100m freestyle.
