DECORATIVE slabs that have been "damaged by emergency vehicles" at Dunfermline's war memorial are to be replaced.

Fife Council have submitted planning applications for the site at Monastery Street which will see cracked and broken paving lifted and new spherical bollards installed.

Caithness flagstones will be laid and extra care taken to reduce trip hazards.

As the war memorial is a category C listed monument, listed building consent has also been sought.

The council's application said the "current slabbed area has been damaged by emergency vehicles" and it's not yet known how much the project will cost or if work will be carried out in time for this year's Remembrance services.

A spokesperson said: "The project to replace them is still being costed up and planning permission and listed building consent have been applied for in the meantime.

"Assuming there's adequate funding available, and planning permission is given, we're looking to begin work towards the end of the year."

Once the new paving is laid the area will be restricted, with no public pedestrian access for two days to "allow adequate setting time".

The application added that black spherical bollards will be installed in line with the monument wall.
