SCOTLAND and Real Madrid star Caroline Weir is "absolutely gutted" after suffering a serious knee injury on international duty.

The 28-year-old midfielder, from Dunfermline, confirmed yesterday (Thursday) that she had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in the 1-1 draw against Belgium on Tuesday night.

Weir, who has 102 caps for Scotland, now faces a lengthy spell out of the game and Real Madrid said she "will undergo surgery in the coming days".

On her X page she said: "Unfortunately the scan this morning confirmed I have torn my ACL

"Absolutely gutted to be sidelined for a long period of time but I will focus on coming back stronger and putting everything into my rehab."

"I know there will be difficult moments coming up but I've also been lucky up until now to have never had a serious injury so I also have a lot to be grateful for.

"For now I'll be supporting my Real Madrid and Scotland team-mates."

Weir limped out of the action after just 20 minutes of the match against Belgium and, afterwards, furious Scotland boss Pedro Martinez Losa felt she had been targeted.

“First of all I am very angry,” he said. “We had an injury to our best player and the deliberate part of that was very important.

“Standards at this stage are at a high level. We were punished the other day.

"The referee was not aware of what was going on with Weir and with Kirsty Hanson and I don’t think she was properly looking.

“When [I was booked] I was telling her that there were two or three tackles when she was following the ball but contact was arriving intentionally."
